avzel said...

{a}don Xaxam said...

avzel said...

{a}don Xaxam said...

avzel said...

{a}don Xaxam said...

It is quite unfortunate and disappointing to see provincialism of this degree from high level mathematicians. Several decades ago, when Erdos' ideas were not yet well known and sufficiently integrated into main stream mathematics, contemptuous views of the type that you expressed in your blog were at least somewhat understandable. But in recent decades, work by Furstenberg, Katznelson, Weiss, Bourgain, Gowers, Tao and many others have demonstrated very clearly not only the depth of Erdos' and Szemeredi's mathematics, but also its connections with many other areas of mathematics. Recent works by Tao, Ziegler, Green and others have also demonstrated powerful connections between these ideas and group/ring theory. The time when a problem was unlikely to be considered interesting unless the statement was three pages long is long gone and it is time for the condescension towards Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics to end.

avzel said...

avzel said...

iosevich: I am afraid I have neither time, nor a slightest inclination to engage in a flame war. I am not a public figure, this is a personal journal I am writing for myself, my family and a small number of my friends. I think I am entitled to my personal tastes in math (and not only in math) as much as you are entitled to yours.

I have a lot of respect to mathematicians you mentioned, and admire some of them (for instance Tao). I don't think they need your passionate defense since their work is amply recognized and rewarded by the mathematical community (obviously including today's event). Frankly, I don't understand why you are so concerned that somebody doesn't quite share your vision of math.

avzel said...

rus4 said...

bravchick said...

avzel said...

bravchick said...

2. diversity.

avzel said...

To iosevich:

I had engaged in a lot of flame wars about related subjects. In contrast with Avzel, I do not only believe that I am entitled to my opinion, but also that my opinion is the correct one.

First, you should not start your list with Furstenberg. His work did not "demonstrate very clearly ... the depth of Erdos' and Szemeredi's mathematics". His work demonstrated the power of the conceptual mathematics in comparison with the "Hungarian" one. Furstenberg's proof is completely independent of the original one, and, in particular, by this reason alone cannot demonstrate anything about "Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics".

While the conceptual mathematics of Serre-Atiyah-Milnor-..., of which the dynamical systems and the ergodic theory is an organic part, is capable of reproducing the most spectacular results of the Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics or solving its outstanding problems, I am not aware of any comparable example going in the opposite direction. If you are aware of such examples, please, tell about them.

You are completely wrong about 3-pages long statements. Such a statement is universally considered as a bad one. Given a moderate amount of prerequisites, all great results of the Serre-... mathematics can be stated in several lines (the prerequisites are mostly included in the first year graduate courses in the USA; in Moscow, at least in the past, already the first year undergraduate student may knew them). Some achievements do not allow a succinct statement because they are useful theories, and not just answers to somebody's questions.

About which connections with group and ring theories are you talking? Replacing the additive group of integers by some more general groups is not a connection. Was any problem in the group theory recognized by experts as an important one was solved by tools from the "Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics"? The ring theory?

Yes, the "Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics" is now taking a visible proportion of prizes and other tokens of recognition. This is not an indicator of its importance, it is an indicator of incredible influence of some top-class mathematicians (I am even lucky enough to know at least one of them personally), i.e. a purely political phenomenon. In the short term, the rise of the "Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics" is bad for mathematics. In the long term it may even lead to its going into oblivion (Gowers himself outlined one possible scenario, in fact).

If we step out of mathematics, all this and the very existence of mathematics itself do not matter much for the human race.

To Sowa: "In the long term it may even lead to its going into oblivion (Gowers himself outlined one possible scenario, in fact)."

dimpase said...

It is extremely fitting that he should receive an award of the magnitude of the Abel Prize.

avzel said...

Anonymous said...

To nieuwe_zijde and Anonymous:

Gowers speaks about a possible scenario of the development of mathematics in his essay "Rough structure and classification" (published in a special issue of "Geometric and Functional Analysis" in 2000 or 2001). See Section 2 entitled "Will mathematics exists in 2099?" He outlines a scenario in which mathematicians are gradually replaced by computers. This essay cannot be separated from his more famous essay "The two cultures in mathematics", published nearly simultaneously. All supporting examples for his scenario belong to his "second culture", which is more or less coinciding with the Hungarian style combinatorics. His attempts to approach some issues of the first culture along the lines outlined by him failed abysmally. A Wigner-shift to the Hungarian combinatorics would make his scenario a much more probable one. Indeed, it would be not very surprising if a Szemeredi-Gowers-like mathematician could be surpassed by computers (assuming that Gowers’ own description of his style in “Two cultures...” is correct), very much like Kasparov was surpassed by a very primitive by the current standards computer. But it is hard to imagine that Serre or Milnor can be ever approached by a computer.

There is no surprise in that Gowers is pleased by this prize to Szemeredi; most likely he spent a lot of efforts lobbying for him. The second half of the mathematical life of T. Gowers was devoted to developing new proofs of the main result of Szemeredi's mathematical life. Now Gowers is mostly involved in some sort of politics. Not all of it is bad. His role in the campaign against the most predatory scientific publisher, Reed-Elsevier, can be only appreciated. One may only regret that in these efforts he did gained much less support than in his efforts to elevate the Hungarian combinatorics to a status comparable with the real mathematics (Hungarian combinatorics is very much like chess, which is technically is also a branch of mathematics, but a very uninteresting one, as G. Hardy noticed many years ago).
